Introduction

York Regional Transit (YRT) offers more than 100 routes including conventional services, GO Shuttles, Express services, community buses and high school, college and university services.

Express services let you travel in style with fast service in comfortable, coach-style buses that operate during peak periods. They don't stop as many times as conventional buses so you'll connect to your destination sooner - perfect for business travellers or other busy people on the go. Express fares apply.

Community buses
Community bus routes are designed for seniors and people with disabilities who can use fully accessible conventional transit rather than Mobility Plus. They provide better connections to facilities such as seniors' residences, medical facilities, community centres and shopping areas.

High school, college and university service YRT and Viva offer service to many high schools, colleges and York University. Ride to York University, Seneca College (Newnham, King or Markham campuses) and Humber College with a single transit fare. Look up your destination in the table below and click on a route link to download a PDF Route Navigator.

VivaStation in Oak Ridges
Viva operates on a pre-paid, proof-of-payment system. There are no fare boxes on Viva so you must purchase tickets or passes prior to boarding and hold onto them in case a Fare Inspector asks for proof of payment. If you are using an unvalidated ticket, you must validate it at a vivaNow machine (located at all vivastations and terminals) prior to boarding. When a ticket is validated, the date and expiry time are printed on the ticket. If you are using a single ride ticket, the date and expiry time are printed on it at the time of purchase, so it does not need to be validated. To transfer to a YRT bus, just show your validated ticket or pass to the bus driver when boarding.

Fare Media Inspectors and Special Constables roam the YRT/Viva system daily to ensure compliance with the proof-of-payment system. Transit Enforcement staff make random on-bus checks to ensure correct use of tickets, transfers and passes. Customers without valid fares may be subject to a warning, $150.00 fine or criminal charge.

VIVA
VIVA Green bus in Markham
Viva provides express bus service on comfortable articulated buses, connecting Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Aurora and Newmarket with Toronto's subway system, GO Transit, and the Region of Peel. It operates along major corridors with limited stops at designated VIVAstations, much like an above-ground subway. Most routes [Route Maps] have intervals of 15 minutes or less.

There are five key routes (from west to east):

  • Martin Grove - York U - Downsview Subway Station (Orange route signs)
  • York University - Richmond Hill Centre - McCowan - Cornell (Lilac route signs)
  • Newmarket - Richmond Hill Centre - Finch Station (blue route signs) [with Zone change at Bloomington]
  • Finch Station - Richmond Hill Centre - Unionville Station (Peak only - Pink route signs)
  • Don Mills Station - McCowan - Cornell (Peak only - Green route signs)

Stops along Viva routes [Viva Route Map] are called "vivastations" and have a ticket vending machine and a ticket validator (fares are on a proof-of-payment basis to speed up boarding times). Fare Media Inspectors can be seen on the buses and in the terminals to ensure the correct use of YRT/Viva tickets and passes.
