Richmond Hill has 160,000 residents, who live only a half hour from Toronto. The community has access to Yonge Street and Highway 404 (going north-south) and highways 401, 7 and the 407 ERT toll highway (going east-west) and is also served by York Region Transit, Viva express routes, GO transit routes and CN Rail. Richmond Hill has a large industrial base of more than 5,000 businesses, including many in the high tech and biotech sector including manufacturers and corporate head offices located in the community's four business parks. Shopping Richmond Hill has a main street shopping area and is served by a number of malls Recreation Richmond Hill has over 130 parks and natural areas, and is home to the GTA's only indoor wave pool. There are 4 indoor pools, 11 tennis courts, 59 baseball diamonds, 6 community centres, a public golf course and 4 private golf courses, and 4 arenas, including the Elvis Stoyko Arena is headquarters for the area's figure skaters, named for the famous Olympic figure skating medalist who trained in Richmond Hill. There is also one performance theatre and three cinemas in the community. There are 5 recreational lakes in Richmond Hill including Lake Wilcox, a popular location for windsurfers and other water enthusiasts The David Dunlap Observatory is the largest optical telescope in Canada, used as a research facility by the University of Toronto. Homes Each year 2,000 new homes are built, providing diverse options equivalent to nearby communities and include detached dwellings, condominiums, townhomes, waterfront homes, and executive homes. The largest number of residences are single family detached. There are some older post-war homes, but many are being refurbished or torn down for new developments.
