Homes: Markham Neighbourhood
Markham, just 30 minutes north of Toronto, has a population 245,000 and is home to over 850 high tech companies including IBM, Apple, Toshiba and Lucent (which together employ 35,000 area residents). Markham and Unionville both have beautiful heritage areas with brick sidewalks and gas street lamps. The community is well served by York Region Transit, the Viva Express Lines, GO Train and Go Bus (about 25 minutes to downtown Toronto), and are accessible to highways 404 and the 407 ERT toll highway. Buttonville Airport, a private airport serving small aircraft & corporate jets, is only minutes from Markham's business areas. Schools Markham has 30 elementary schools (1 French) and 16 high schools. Shopping Unionville and Markham both have quaint main streets, and the Markville Shopping Centre which is the largest mall in the area. Recreation There is an extensive network of parks throughout York Region's largest municipality Recreational facilities include four pools, 9 arenas and skating rinks, 7recreation and community centres, 15 baseball diamonds, 15 tennis courts, 7 public golf courses, and 15 private golf courses. Thornhill's Too Good pond is popular for ice skating in the wintertime. There is also a live theatre and a movie cinema in Markham. Homes This community has exploded from a population of just 56,000 in 1976. Most of the housing in Markham dates after this time. New housing developments in Markham cater to both the first-time buyer as well as families expanding to larger homes, with Unionville being a little more upscale. Most housing consists of detached homes, with an increasing supply of condominiums, townhouses and semi-detached homes. The Cornell subdivision (now with 20,000 residents) in northeast Markham has won awards for urban design. Two other popular developments, north of 16th Avenue are Greensborough/ Swan Lake (east of Markham Rd), and Wismer Commons (west of Markham Rd).
